Why is centripetal force always points towards the center of the object? Also, why is friction force the centripetal force is most situations? I really don't get why.

|dw:1386630974631:dw| Imagine that you have 2 balls move around like this, your hand is in the center of the circle and you hold the balls and keep them are in the circle. The force from your hand is centripetal force and its direction is to the center. now, imagine that this force is no longer there from ball 1, what happens? without that force, the ball is out of the circle.
