An electromagnet is a temporary magnet. An electromagnet works by providing it with electricity which in turns creates a magnetic field. However, when close the switch or turn the electricity off, you cut of the flow of electricity to the electromagnetic. Therefore, no magnetic field is produced and the electromagnetic won't work unless some power source is given.
