In 1836, the Texan Army under Sam Houston defeated the Mexicans at the Battle of San Jacinto, winning independence for Texas. During the Mexican-American War of the late 1840s, Mexico attempted to annex Texas. The Americans won the war and Texas remained a U.S. state
