what is y=-(1/4)x

OpenStudy (phi):

direct variation ? a line ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to put it in standard form

OpenStudy (phi):

standard form means the letters are on the left side, in alphabetical order I would add +1/4 x to both sides \[ y=- \frac{1}{4}x \\ \frac{1}{4}x + y = \frac{1}{4}x - \frac{1}{4}x \\ \frac{1}{4}x + y = 0 \] Also, they may want only positive integers (whole numbers) in front of the letters. we can get rid of the 1/4 by multiplying the equation (both sides and *all* terms by 4) \[ 4 \cdot \frac{1}{4}x + 4 \cdot y =4 \cdot 0\] simplify to get \[ x + 4y = 0 \]
