Hello again! Once again, I'm confused

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

I've literally been doing algebra ALL DAY! With NO BREAKS (I worked during lunch and dinner)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

y = |x - h| + k h for left/right k for up/down

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

So it's then right 1 and down 2?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

y = |x + 1| - 2 so h = -1 (left 1) and k = -2 (down 2)

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Oh so -1 means left for the h one?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

y = |x + 1| - 2 = |x - (-1)| - 2 y = |x - h | + k

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

so h = -1 negative h means to the left

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

parent graph: y = |x| looks like|dw:1386715531365:dw|then y = |x - 3| would be parent graph moved right 3

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Oh okay! So then -3

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

|dw:1386715686329:dw|

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

that's where most people get confused ;) y = |x - h| + k so what you see as h is translated oppositely so y = |x - 3| ^ h = 3 so move 3 to the right

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

My head is spinning lol :D

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Oh wait! I think I understand what your saying! It's the absolute value idea, right?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

it's more of a vertex form idea actually like even for parabolas y = (x - h)^2 + k if it was like y = (x - 2)^2 most people mistaken it as moving left 2 but it's the opposite, it would be right 2 so for y = |x - 3| it would be right 3, not left 3

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Thanks! I have a few more questions I'm gonna try myself. I may need you to check them over though lol :D If I do, I'll tag ya

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

sure :)
