Could we have a totalitarian dictator in the USA?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anything is possible in extreme circumstances to the best of nations or people. Look what happened to Germany in the 1920's and 30's when the Nazis took power, or to Russia after the revolution which placed the Soviets in power. But in the US, the odds are still very much against that we'll go down either path despite all of the negativity in the news today. Our system of government is still balanced between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government preventing such extreme abuses. The President can't simply order the army to go out and start rounding up people at random because they disagree with him and call him funny names, or if they're not "Republican" or "Democratic" enough. Congress and the courts are set up to see that doesn't happen and uphold the laws that safeguard against the thing that the founding fathers never wanted a repeat of.
