if a plane can travel 450 miles per hour with the wind and 410 miles per hour against the wind, find the speed of the plane in still air?

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

@alekos

OpenStudy (alekos):

thanks Isaiah let Vp be the speed of the plane and Vw speed of the wind so we have with the wind Vp + Vw = 450 and against the wind Vp - Vw = 410 just solve fo Vp

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

Solve for Vp by adding the two equations that gives you...2Vp=860. Divide both sides by 2 and you get Vp = 430.

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

Oh gosh my first comment is absolutely pointless I read the question wrongly!

OpenStudy (alekos):

don't worry about it. its one of those relative velocity questions that you see in physics

OpenStudy (alekos):

you happy with that Steven?
