The burglar has been leaving behind the ladder he or she uses to climb into the houses’ windows. With this evidence, you can find out the store from which the burglar is purchasing the ladders. Store A only sells ladders that are between 25 feet and 30 feet tall. Store B only sells ladders that are between 20 feet and 28 feet tall. Using the diagrams below, determine the length of the ladders and deduce where the burglar buys the ladders. So far i have checked my work three times and i get the same answer every time!

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you think you could help?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Oh, I am sorry, but the attachment doesn't work for me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok do you think i could tell you the measurements of the triangle

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

The measurements depend on how you put the ladder.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Makes sense?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I am lacking info though, how high is a floor?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

for that \[a^2+b^2=c^2~~~~~~~->~~~~10^2+25^2=c^2~~~~~~~~~~~c=?\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and i got 725. the square root of that is 26.925 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I was disconnected, sorry.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I don;t have a calc, give me a couple of seconds.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats fine and ok!

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Yes! \[\sqrt{725}~~~~~~~or~~~~~5\sqrt{29}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is where i get confused because i have to pick from one of the stores

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the ladder could be from either

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes, Store A only sells ladders that are between 25 feet and 30 feet tall. Store B only sells ladders that are between 20 feet and 28 feet tall. he need a ladder to climb inside the window, so theoretically yes, he can pick from both because 26.925 is between either of them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i thought so. i felt like i did something wrong because he could have gotten it from either.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes, and you were CORRECT, it's both.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
