Why was the creation of the League of Nations included in the Treaty of Versailles?

Because people were freaked out over how terrible WW1 was. No one wanted a repeat performance, so the League was thought up as a neat idea to get everyone together and hash out their problems in a public forum to prevent another world war. Unfortunately, it pretty much failed because we had WW2 several years later.
