From Jan to March means his earning increased, his slope is a positive
the slope from January is 3/2 (rise over run) and it is a positive slope. increases from left to right this kind of slope ^ would be good for Jim because he would keep receiving more money.
Think of it as a hill, going up means positive, descending means negative.
