Erm, are you asking what others in the scientific community thought of his work?
To that I would say that they were all quite pissed. At the time, many people believed in creationism, that god made all living things perfectly, so it was quite controversial. Compared to when his works were published, it wasn't until recently that scientists started to see the value of his studies.
