from what country has the united states acquired the most land?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My best guess would be from France due to the Louisiana Purchase that occurred in 1803, in which the United States bought 828,000 square miles of land from the French for 15 million dollars, which is about 3 cents per acre. The picture shows the area that was bought from the French.

If not France, my second guess would be Mexico due to the Mexican-American war of 1846-1848. Following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the United States annexed the territories of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, partial Wyoming, Nevada and California.
