Trust is like oxygen: vital to human fl ourishing and unnoticed until it goes missing. But trust is
seeping away in many areas of life, with damaging consequences for the economy, for institutional
performance and for the health of society. Trust in many institutions and professions – especially
politics, media and corporate leadership – has fallen markedly in most western nations. The UK is
no exception. General levels of trust have also fallen: fewer than half of the population now thinks
that ‘most people can be trusted’.
