i assume indirect reasoning in this case means a proof by contradiction

in which case you would assume that the product is even and both the numbers were odd, and derive the contradiction

clear or no? two general odd numbers look like \(2k+1\) and \(2j+1\) multiply them together and deduce that the product is odd
