Why did Einstein decide that there was no observable difference between acceleration and gravity?

Imagined what you would feel in a closed box, and decided you could not perform an experiment in there that would tell whether you were in gravity or being accelerated rapidly upward. Eventually, he made it more mathematical, I would expect.
