Daily fun-fact/poll on Open Study!! :D GIVE YOUR OPINION

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

What if there was a poll on Open Study. Every day, people would answer the poll question. It would be a random question, but something easy enough that ANYONE could answer it (not just high school grads lol). We could then see how many percent of people think which answer. At the end of the day, or at a set time, the answer would be revealed. Anyone who had gotten it right would receive one _______ (this could either be a point, a badge, or anything unrelated to the smart score. It could directly influence the smart score, just like number of badges would influence smartscore. But it wouldn't BE the smartscore.) Then, when people get the next day's question, they would see yesterday's answer, an explanation for it, and how many percents of people had answered that correctly.

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

The only would take less than one minute per day to answer. Therefore, it wouldn't distract from answering real questions. But, it would encourage users to play daily. it would also spark interest in other topics, and allow kids to learn a fun fact every day! :D

OpenStudy (travisbrown372):

wow

OpenStudy (travisbrown372):

good idea God bless!

OpenStudy (travisbrown372):

@221emily @Gatorgirl @esshotwired @SeaTurtle113 @Whiteboy1949 @SolomonZelman @rxinstorm

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

you can't let every one that answers see the other persons answer...otherwise, everybody could just copy the previous answer

OpenStudy (esshotwired):

I LOVE IT!! xD Maybe do like 2 levels though: Elementary/Middle and High School/College. Because it would be really easy if it should be for one whole group especially high school and college level kids. But that sounds like so much FUN!! ^.^

OpenStudy (tester97):

Wow this is a great idea :) usually i hate being mass tagged, but suprisengly i like this post :) This ideas sounds sooooo wonderful and great ^_^ @charlotte123 doesnt this sound wonderful?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I like the idea, however....would it just be like posting the answer where everyone can see it, and everyone could copy...??

OpenStudy (esshotwired):

^^ I agree. People could help friends by finding out the answer for them. Maybe the answer should not be announced until the end of the day so that no one can use the answer and give it to friends. Would that help?

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Nobody would know the answer until the question was closed at the end of the day. So nobody would ever be sure

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

It sounds fun. But people, if they do not know it, are gonna go with the answer of people with high smart scores

OpenStudy (esshotwired):

Well then I think there wouldn't be a flaw it if it was closed at the end of the day and no one knew the answer till after it was closed!! xD

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Nobody would ever know what anyone else answered. Ever. unless someone cheated and told anyone. At the end of each day, all you would see if percentage of people who answered correctly.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

oh...I understand now.....that sounds fun.

OpenStudy (blues):

We had something very similar a couple years ago - but after the first couple weeks it died out for want of participation.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

are you a politician ?? lol

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Great! So this idea is already set up! :D It wouldn't be too hard to get it up and running again. We are a group of people who are interested in this idea. If we add some sort of motivation, it shouldn't die out too quickly

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

And I guess so! @texaschic101

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I am with you PixieDust :)

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (esshotwired):

So am I!! xD

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

WONDERFUL! EXCELLENT! AWESOME! *_*

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

Thank you for linking me @tester97 - IT WAS WORTH IT *-*

OpenStudy (tester97):

no problem char bar :)

OpenStudy (lncognlto):

I think this sounds like a cool idea. ^-^

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Thanks! Do you guys think you could help me get it to the attention of Preetha?

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

Sure! I can send her a PM too!

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@Preetha We Need You In Here ASAP Please!

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

There ya go!

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Thank ya! :D

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

No problem Pixie! Take care! :D

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

You too! :D

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I think more people will agree with you :)

OpenStudy (blues):

I think Preetha is already aware of this thread - she keeps a close eye on the Feedback Group. Or if she isn't, she will be by the time she has caught up with things on the weekend.

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Oh good! :D Thanks blues!

OpenStudy (blues):

What you can do while you are waiting for Preetha's input is to compile your ideas into a briefer, easily read summary. She will appreciate that. And you can look at some of the logistic details. How will this actually work? Who will come up with questions? What will the questions be about? How often will you have questions? How long will the polls be open? What reward or incentive, if any, will people get for participating?

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

That is a great idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!! :D

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Okay - here goes! Hello Preetha, and everyone else! :D Thank you for taking the time to read my suggestion. I hope this will provide some good ideas to maybe consider for use at some point. My idea was to do a daily fun-fact poll. Every day, a random fun fact (assigned by a mod, admin, etc) would be asked. The users would answer it daily. Once they answered the trivia question, a message would appear saying "Congratulations! You have successfully submitted your answer for today's poll. Check back tomorrow to see if you were right!" Then, the next day, users could view yesterday's question, answer + explanation, and the percentage of users who guessed correctly. They could also then answer the question of today. If the user got the question correct, the NEXT DAY they would be with a reward trivia star. The stars could add up, similar to the badges. They would have a minor effect on the Smart Score. It wouldn't weight too heavily, but at least it would be a motivation for answering the fun facts daily. I would like to take a moment to show the point of doing this. The goal is to have the kids learn new fun facts! Those basic little trivia questions can really spark an interest in a topic! let me give you an example. Let's say, the trivia question is... "what is the top speed a cheetah can run at?" A.) 50 mph B.) 70 mph C.) 30 mph D.) 100 mph Next, the kid would answer the question. no matter which answer they picked, they would see "Congratulations! You have successfully submitted your answer for today's poll. Check back tomorrow to see if you were right!" The next day... Now, the polls are closed for yesterday's topic. They would close at 11:59p.m. (pick a timezone). From that time on, you would see... Yesterday's Poll Question "what is the top speed a cheetah can run at?" A.) 50 mph - 20% B.) 70 mph - 40% C.) 30 mph - 10% D.) 100 mph - 30% (The percents are the percentages of people who selected that as their answer.) The answer was B. Cheetahs can reach speed of up 70mph! That's pretty fast! Cheetahs can run this fast because _____________________________________________etc (at this point, a short paragraph of information on the cheetah running at lightning speed would be presented.) Maybe on this screen, it can also tell what answer the kid had selected. It can say, "Congratulations, you answered the trivia poll correctly!" or "Oops! Better luck next time!" Kids get to learn more about the world around them through these daily fun facts! Yes, it's still learning. But it just seems like fun! This can also help students in school. If cheetahs come up in science class, they may just get some extra credit on a test! :) Okay, back to how this would work. Nobody would be able to just copy someone else's answer. In fact, nobody would ever know what anyone else answered unless someone cheated. But to prevent the widespread cheating that VERY LIKELY will go on, I suggest that the question pop up as soon as the user logs in. Therefore, they would have to answer it before entering the website. If the user doesn't want to answer the question, they can click the "x" on the top right of the question box. A message would then come up saying, "You are about to exit out of the daily fun fact. You will not be able to answer this later. Are you sure you wish to proceed?" At that point, the student can click "yes" or "no". That way, people won't be able to share answers with each other. Also, mods could keep an eye out for answer sharing. Also, more students would want to answer the question if it popped up right in their face. Some people would be too lazy to scout it out if it wasn't right there lol :) But, I know there may be technical problems with that. If it has to be an in-site thing, I suggest putting it someplace obvious. More cheating may occur, but hey! At least they learned a new fact that they didn't know before. Either way, its all a gain. And until the next day, nobody could EVER be sure if their answer was really right or not. So... i think that is about it! Those are the reasons why I think that OpenStudy should have a daily trivia poll that earns "stars" or points of some kind that lightly effects smartscore. I understand that there was something similar to this already in place a few years ago. That's terrific! Therefore, the format is already in place. Although that didn't work out, you can see, based on the replys above, that today's OpenStudiers are very interested in a trivia poll! Also, if it effects smartscore, even very minorly, I think it would be a big success. This would also encourage users to play daily. What site doesn't need more traffic? :) The more daily users, the more people to help others with questions. Oh, and it won't take to long to answer the questions. At most, maybe 2 minutes. Therefore, it will not distract from answering real questions from other users in need of school-help. I ask that you please consider this idea. This is what the users are really wanting. Thank you for taking the time to read this. "Owl" talk to you guys later! PixieDust1

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

I KNOW THAT IS REALLY LONG!! BUT PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ IT

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

I Read Everything - And Man - I LOVE THE IDEA! I Said It Once - I Shall Say It Again

@Preetha - Thanks for taking the time to consider this and read it over :D

OpenStudy (preetha):

Love it. Send me a question by pm, I'll put it up today! We can track the daily winners and enter them for a monthly drawing for a prize.

OpenStudy (pixiedust1):

Great! I sure will! :D Thanks again! I'm gonna go do some research to find something interesting :)
