The Japanese took huge losses -- four carriers along with hundreds of pilots and thousands of crew. A lot of experienced people were lost in one battle on the Japanese side. The US lost only one and still had two more carriers to fight with. They had wrecked the Imperial Japanese Navy's ability to go on the offensive in a single, decisive fight, setting back their forces who now were on more defensive footing for the rest of the war as the United States began catching up.
