OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Situational irony is when a story takes a situation and give it a twist that contradicts or contrasts against the expected outcome. Christmas time brings to mind a perfect example of situational irony in the story The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. In the story, a man and a wife want to get each other a Christmas gift. The wife has long beautiful hair that she was very proud and fond of and so the man wants to get her a beautiful silver brush (or was it a comb) for her hair. The man had a treasured family heirloom pocket watch that he loved, but it had no chain. They were poor and had little money, so the wife cut off her hair and sold it to a wig maker so that she could buy her husband a chain for her watch. Meanwhile, the husband pawns his watch so that he can buy his wife the silver brush for her hair. That is situational irony.
