why did the english establish colonies in the americas

Resources and Geo-political power. When Spain started colonizing South America and parts of North America, they gained vasts amounts of gold, silver, jewels, new food items (like chocolate) and land. The English wanted the same so they sent over early colonies (Jamestown) Some also began to colonize the region to gain religious freedom from the church run English way of life (Pilgrams).
