I shall elaborate on Callisto good answer.
Graphics = Ray tracing. 
Ray tracing = Realistic graphics.

Though with ray tracing you apply trigonometry more than geometry. 
@bibby that is a flowchart, honestly I do not think many people, only large projects still use them.
