What: The G.I. Bill of Rights, also known as the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, was passed to guarantee returning veterans a year's unemployment compensation and medical coverage as well as low-interest loans for buying a home or starting a business. When: 1944 Significance: Perhaps most significantly, the GI Bill paid for veterans' job training and education. By 1951, about eight million veterans had received these educational benefits. About 2.3 million of them were in colleges and universities. By 1955, veterans had received 4.3 million home loans.
