find the remainder when f(x)=4x^3-20x-50 is divided by x-3.

find f(3)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hello, Need, You could find the remainder in at least two different ways: (1) use long division; (2) use synthetic division. Which one sounds less threatening to you? If you use synthetic division, use 3 (not (x-3) ) as your divisor. Try to get started on this; draw something I can see. I'll then gladly give you some feedback. Good luck!

By the way, xxferrocixx was right on target in suggesting you find f(3). To do this, substitute 3 for every x that appears in the formula you've given us.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Done by synthetic division, the remainder is -2. Done by evaluating f(x)=4x^3-20x-50 at x = 3, the remainder (equal to f(3) ) is again -2. Try these two different methods on your own for the practice. Good luck!
