Fiona has a jar filled with 150 coins made up of quarters and nickels. The total value of the coins is $25.10. Let x represent the number of quarters in the jar. Which equation can be used to find the number of quarters? A. 0.25x + 0.05(x – 150) = 25.10 B. 0.05x + 0.25(150 – x) = 25.10 C. 0.05x + 0.25(x – 150) = 25.10 D. 0.25x + 0.05(150 – x) = 25.10

The answer is "D". Want to know how?

thanks

OpenStudy (disco619):

First we will separate the options which have "0.25x" in the start as price of quarter is 0.25 and multiplying it by the number of quarters in jar will tell us the price of total Quarters. Which means we will select "A" and "D" and ignore the rest. Now in "A" it says to find the value of total Nickels: 0.05(x - 150) Now this would be wrong as: |dw:1386979179759:dw| So we will not subtract the "price of nickel in the number of quarters" by "price if total 150 nickel" but we will do the opposite. We will not: 0.05x - 7.5 But we will: 7.5 - 0.05x Now this "7.5 - 0.05x" comes from the equation "D" so that would be right. [It's a little confusing but that's the easiest way to explain]
