I should know this, but it is confusing me....
In the sentence : I haven't slept all night . Is the verb haven't slept, or is it have slept, because " not " is an adverb ?
@Zarkon , @zepdrix ....can you help
@jaredfleagle ...help
"I haven't slept all night" is the question the teacher gives and wants the verb found in only this one question correct?
correct
I'm not completely sure but I think it is haven't.
I was thinking it was have slept because " not " is an adverb...but I am not 100% sure
Verbs are doing words. A verb can express a physical action, a mental action, or a state of being
I understand what verbs are....but " not " is an adverb. Would you consider that part of the verb ?
well the person "slept" also
sleeping is a physical action
yes...slept is part of the verb...but is haven't a verb...have not....because by itself, not is an adverb
now you got me confused
lol....ikr
I think you guys need a break lol.
I know..my brain hurts from thinking too much
haven't wouldn't be a verb though because its not expressing a action?
have is a linking verb
I have no idea I'm not good at verbs. So I guess you know the answer than...
but haven't doesn't mean have
*then
it means have not
haven't is have not.....would you just use have (linking verb) and slept (action verb) and leave " not " out because it is an adverb
but you can't use have though because its not in the question. What are you exactly doing here? your only mission is to find the verb right? Let me go find my old grammar book brb
O.O wow
yes...we are still here picking our brains
ok, haven't is a helper but I'm pretty sure over all slept is the verb. I think
its has to be. its correct with everything dealing with the definition of a verb
ok...I will put that then. Thank you both so much :)
so you are putting down slept as the verb
I think I am just going to put " haven't slept " because it is asking for the complete verb and that includes linking verbs
but haven't is a helper not the verb lol
no wait you are correct!!! nvm
haven't slept is the verb;)
ok...thanks again....I will put that :)
lol i have been up to long
its Friday...a good day to stay up late :)
and did I just say haven't can't be part of the verb because its a helper? man I have been up way to late. Sorry for the mix ups and if the answer is wrong I am going to kick your teacher in the face
lol....kick away
"not" is not a verb form; "have slept" is the verb, with "not" modifying it.
I thought about that. I went ahead and put " haven't slept " as the verb. I am gonna get this one wrong, but now I know for future reference. Thanks Douglas :)
