first you want to bring them to equal ground so that you know you're doing the math right. For example, you don't want to minus an orange from an apple. But, if you put an apple beside the orange and an orange beside the apple (the original apple), you have something to minus from. I know it's kind of a weird analogy…and probably not the best, but i hope it makes sense?
