Let's make it easy:
x + y = 1
-x + y =3

You would just add the two equations and get the new equation:
2y = 4  ---> y = 2

Then plug in y for one of the previous equations
x + 2 = 1 ---> x =-1

It's called elimination because you eliminated the x term. Then you solved for y.
