That's a nice choice. Try to focus on one thing about him maybe, not everything about him yknow? Such as his personality, or how you can see ___ in his eyes. That sort of thing. 
Googling around poetry tips and tricks does help, as well. As long as you don't actually steal someone else's work, there's no shame in researching a bit!
