Based on the map, why might Islam have influenced the rulers of Ghana? The edicts of Islam were especially influential to West African groups living on the edges of the Sahara. The importance of trade in Ghana's economy required contact with Islamic groups from North Africa. Ghana's remote location on the edge of the Sahara desert made it attractive for Muslim explorers to seek out. Ghana's strategic location on the Niger River made it an attractive site for Muslim pilgrims to seek out.
