a chlorine atom becomes a chloride ion when it .....?? fill in the blank.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i fgured it out i think it will turn into a chloride ion when it gains or loses a electron ..... someone please tell me im right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A chlorine atom will become a chloride ion when it gain or loses an electron. If a chlorine atom gains an electron, the overall charge of the atom becomes negatively charged and is called a anion. If a chlorine atom loses an electron, the overall charge of the atom becomes positive and a positively charged ion is called an cation. So yes you are correct.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

the suffix -ide in chlor\(ide\) ion \((F^-)\) implies that it is a negative atom, the only way for it do that is for it to gain an electron.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

negative ion**
