-b formula problem.. [Basic Error?]

OpenStudy (asylum15):

Through solving by minus b, I get x = -1 or x = -3. But how do I write this in terms of (2s ) and (s ) ?

OpenStudy (asylum15):

Hi Phi :)

OpenStudy (phi):

Let me use x instead of s (force of habit) you found the solutions to \[ 2x^2 +8x + 6 = 0 \] notice that you can divide both sides of the equation by 2 and get \[ x^2 + 4x + 3=0 \] the solutions are x= -1 and x= -3 x= -1 can be written (add +1 to both sides) as x+1 = 0 also, x= -3 --> x+3 = 0 if we multiply these two equations we get (x+1)(x+3) = 0 expand to get x^2 + 4x + 3 = 0 if you want the original equation multiply both sides by 2: 2x^2 + 8x + 6 = 0 this can be factored into 2(x+1)(x+3) = 0

OpenStudy (asylum15):

I just did a laplace question, and that quadratic above was in the form: |dw:1387375864436:dw|
