Why did the United States military first become involved in Vietnam? U.S leaders worried that Vietnam could spread communism throughout the region. South Vietnamese leaders asked the United States for support against the Vietminh. Vietnam had plentiful valuable agricultural and mineral resources that needed protection. North Vietnamese leaders demanded the United States oppose communist South Vietnam.
