The graph of g(x)=x^2 is translated 4 units down and 7 units to the left. What would be the function produced by the translation?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

In order to shift a function up or down...you have to add or subtract a number from the whole function... so for example... x² - 2 ....this would shift the graph 2 units DOWN because this is - 2 to shift a graph left or right...you would add or subtract a number from the 'x' of the function...for example... (x-2)² would move the graph of x² over to the to right 2 units... So what would your equation look like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it (x+4)^2-7 @johnweldon1993

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it (x+7)^2-4

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Did you get it? remember down 4 would be subtracting 4 from the function...and moving 7 to the left would be adding 7 to the x.....you have the answer up there just which one is it?
