First you can add the 2 to each side, so its \[12 = 3^{x+5}\] Then take the log of both sides.\[\log 12 = \log 3^{x+5}\] Because of log rules, that's equivalent to \[\log12 = (x+5)*\log3\] Then just solve for x.\[x = \frac{ \log 12 }{ \log 3 } - 5\] It doesn't matter what base the logarithm is
