The empire's economy declined as the shift in world trade shifted from the Mediterranean, to the North Atlantic. This happened with the growth of the colonial empires. When the industrial revolution began in the early 18th century, mostly in Western Europe, the focus was taken further away from the Mediterranean. From about 1800 on, with the growth of Britain's empire in India, most trade from Asia

went through the Suez area; which left the Ottomans further isolated, especially when the Suez Canal was completed in 1869.
