sqrt{2x + 6} - sqrt{x - 1} = 2 add sqrt{x - 1} both sides sqrt{2x + 6} = 2+ sqrt{x - 1} square both sides 2x+6 = 4 +x-1 x=? it checks so it is not extraneous
