Why did systems of royal officials tax the population in ancient civilizations? They taxed them because cities became more complex and required public works. They taxed them to prevent civil uprisings over the sharing of resources. They taxed them because specialization was needed to help expand the economy. They taxed them in order to pay merchants to distribute food throughout the society.
