What is the first step of constructing a perpendicular line from a point not on a given line?

Without changing the compass, from each intersecting arc on the line, construct two arcs on the side opposite the given point. Draw a line from the point to the intersecting arcs. From the point not on the line stretch the compass and mark two arcs on the line. Use your ruler and draw a straight line from the point through the line.

You need the slope first. The slope of the perpendicular line would be the negative reciprocal. So if one line has a slope of 2, the perpendicular line would have a slope of -1/2
