Hi! Welcome to OpenStudy, which do you feel is the answer?

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

Do you know how to find the subject of a sentence?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Star, subjects in a sentence are always the word(s) modifying a passive verb or doing the action in an action verb. In this case, you can find this in process of elimination by finding the verb first. The verb in this case is "was". Negatives (n't) are not verbs, so therefore, the verb is only "was". Okay, so you know that the answer is not year. Because the year was not near your campsite. You know the answer is not Nevada, because Nevada is part of a prepositional phrase, and subjects cannot be part of a prepositional phrase. Even though it may appear to be, you can eliminate city because, in this sentence, the word "city" is not used as an individual noun. It is part of a proper noun which is "Carson City". So, by process of elimination, we have come upon Carson City. Test this out to double check our answer. "Carson City was near our camp site." That makes sense, right? Right. Therefore, Carson City is the subject of this sentence.
