Because it's simpler than the American system.

because when you are are dealing with decimals you only have to move the decimal point over for multiples of 10 unlike the english system

Metrics: 10,10,10,10 American: 12,3,220,8

also all units are multiples of each other. 10mm/cm 100cm/m etc.
