HELP PLEASE A jar contains 24 red marbles, 10 blue marbles, and 8 green marbles. What is the ratio of red marbles to the total number of marbles in the jar? A. 4 : 7 B. 3 : 4 C. 12 :17 D. 4 : 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. first things first. Do you know what a ratio is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, then it is asking you to write a ratio of the Number of red marbles(24) to the total number of all the marbles added together. To get the total amount of marbles, just add all of the amounts of marbles together: \[24 + 10 + 8 =?\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

42

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct, so what is the ratio of red marbles to the sum of all the marbles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so, The first outcome is 24:42 I assume they want it simplified so just divide both numbers by a number they have in common, I chose 2. \[24 \div 2 = 12\] \[42 \div 2 = 21\] So now it is, 12:21 Simplify it even more: Divide both by a number they have in common, I chose 3. \[12\div3 = 4\] \[21\div3 = 7\] So, what will the final ratio be?
