Look at the literal translation of the word: "Photo" means "light". "Synthesis" means "to make." In Greek or Latin, any way one of the classical languages. So put the two together and look at what they mean: "Light" "maker." It is a process that uses energy from light to make new molecules - particularly, to store that energy from light in chemical bonds, that the plant cell can then break to release that energy when it needs energy to maintain itself or do other work.
