A car passes a landmark on a highway traveling at a constant rate of 40 kilometers per hour. Two hours later, a second car passes the same landmark traveling in the same direction at 65 kilometers per hour. How much time after the second car passes the landmark will it overtake the first car? Do not do any rounding.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

After 2 hours, car1 is 80 kilometers from the landmark, while car2 is at 0. because 40 kilometers per hour times 2 hours equals 80 kilometers. follow so far? :)

I understand now :)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

then the difference between how fast the cars are going is 65 - 40 = 25 kilometers per hour which means that then every hour, car2 gains 25 kilometers so take 80kilometers divided by 25 kilometers per hour = (how many hours it take for them to pass each other)

good job!!

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):
