1. Humans developed antibiotics to fight bacterial infections. However, some antibiotics are no longer effective in killing the bacteria they once killed. How does the theory of evolution explain this? a. The antibiotic mutated the bacteria, which allowed resistance to develop. b. After being exposed to the antibiotic, individual bacteria acquired the ability to resist the antibiotic. c. Genetic variation in bacteria made it possible for some individuals to have resistance to the antibiotic, survive and reproduce. d. The antibiotic mutated to an ineffective form. 2. Study the amino acid sequences of the same protein taken from four different species of plants. Which pair of plants is most closely related? Species 1: -A-P-A-C-W- Species 2: -G-P-G-S-F- Species 3: -A-P-A-C-F- Species 4: -N-K-M-H-H- a. Species 2 and 4 b. Species 1 and 3 c. Species 3 and 4 d. Species 1 and 2 3. Which term refers to the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce? a. Natural selection b. Overproduction c. Competition d. Variation 4. Which of the following explains how natural selection leads to evolution? a. Conditions in the environment reduce b. Helpful variations accumulate among surviving members of the species. c. Overproduction provides food for stronger members of the species. d. Environmental changes favor weaker members of the species. 5. Over millions of years of time, an island’s vegetation shifts. The seed-producing plants that dominated the early origins of the island die out in favor of new species of plants that do not produce seeds but provide a good habitat for insects. How is this change likely to affect a species of birds that uses seeds as its primary source of food and insects as a secondary food source? a. The species will maintain its heritable traits while learning to make insects their primary food source. b. The species will decline and become endangered because its adaptations have reduced utility. c. The species will split into two: one adapted to eating seeds and a second adapted to eating insects. d. Over time a shift in traits will be observed as the species adapts to an insect diet. 6. Which of the following occurs during artificial selection, but not during natural selection? a. Selection pressures result in only certain traits from a population being passed on to offspring. b. Traits are passed off to offspring through genes. c. Males and females mate and produce offspring. d. Traits that make an organism more beneficial to humans are favored. 7. Which of the following explains why fossils of some extinct organisms have been found while others have not? a. Fossils only exist for organisms that lived over 3 million years ago. b. Fossils only exist for organisms that had shells or hard outer body coverings. c. Most organisms die and decompose without leaving any fossil remains. d. Only very large organisms have enough body mass to result in fossil formation. 8. Which of the following would not be useful in determining the age of a fossil? a. Radiometric dating of the rock containing the fossil b. Relative dating of the layers surrounding the fossil c. Identification of fossils of known age found near the fossil in question d. Analysis of the stage of embryological development represented by the fossil. 9. Suppose a biologist observes many individuals in a species of flowering plant. She notices that some of the individuals open their flowers in the middle of the day and close at dusk, while others do not open until much later in the afternoon and close after dark. Flowers need to be open for pollinators to visit and transfer pollen for the plant to reproduce. Which of the following is likely to occur over time? a. Artificial selection b. Competition c. Extinction d. Speciation 10. Scientists infer evolutionary relationships between organisms by comparing their a. Number of offspring b. Homologous structures c. Environments d. Trace fossils
Yes- if you could help me... I'd realllllyyy appreciate it. I'm completely lost in science. Lost.
WTF
thats so much
It's only 10 questions..
^^You're soooo helpful. -_-
ok jk
good lord you have to answer all of that poor thing
It's 8th grade science... It's my little brother's. Not mine. But, I'm trying to help him. I'm in 12th grade, and suuuuck at science. Soo.. no help here. BLah.
i think the first one is a or b and im 8 grade too
i am 23

O.o Welcome to OpenStudy. It's only one question per post. And direct answers aren't to be given unless there is an explanation or source provided.
Well, thank you for that. The only ones that I've seen had about ten questions/post. But, I've never used this site, besides just looking at it. I will keep that in mind.
Why did Hersey and chase label the viral DNA with radioactive phosphorous and not radioactive sulfur?
lol can i have your teachers email address so i can go ahead and submit the quiz too?
