A solar panels work from the suns radiation. The solar panels collect the radiation and turn it into energy by using the electric currant which then goes to the charge controller, which makes DC Power, and then goes to the inverter (which contains AC Power), and inverter is just as it sounds, it inverts the DC power into the AC power.

For the second question, radiant light and heat from the sun gets harnessed using a range of ever-evolving.  About half the incoming solar energy reaches the Earth's surface.Then the Solar chemical processes use solar energy to drive chemical reactions.
