Ashan bought 3 1/2 pounds of lunch mear for a ladies in the mall. If she only ended up using 2 1/4 pounds, how much is left?

Left also means to subtract. So you want to subtract 2 1/4 from 3 1/2. To do this get a common denominator (4). Convert the fractions to the common denominator (1/4 is 1/4 and 1/2 is 2/4). Now subtract. We know that 2/4 minus 1/4 is 1/4 and 3 minus 2 is 1. Our answer is 1 1/4.
