What would we need to know to calculate both work and power?

You would need to know the Force being applied and the distance over which the Force is applied. Work is Force.Distance (N/m). Power if the rate of work done, so for this you will need to know the period of how long the force acts \[P=\frac{\Delta W }{\Delta t }\] Power is expressed as Watts, Joules per second.
