OpenStudy (azhu):

I want to improve my English, can you give me some advice about it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, you can go to different websites. Pronunciation Workshop is a good one.

This may be a bad suggestion, but I would recommend playing a team-based MMORPG or at least a game that requires you to communicate with others. There are people who will correct your English when you type(?talk) to them if you ask(like me) and you will learn more words as you see use people use them. While doing so, you play also have fun playing the game. It might just be me, but I hate playing the language learning games like that of Rosetta Stone. Absolutely horrid.

Read as much as you can. Read good books. And pay attention to the language. That is the only real way to improve your language. Then you have to learn good grammar and the mechanics of writing. But start now with reading books.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

MIT has some of their ESL stuff on their OCW site. I saw one of their advanced classes linked before. That is all free.

You should read some books that interests you or watch some English movies, i improved my English like that.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The problem with popular entertainment sources is the quality of the language used and slang. Imagine if someone learned English only from rap songs or gangster movies. News reports tend to use more standard English. Not always the best English, but more standard. If you are far enough along in your studies to know the difference between slang and not-slang, these sources are a great way to improve common communications. Until that point, they come with a risk of learning improper uses and slang.

Read newspapers everyday loudly in front of mirror.. This is a good practice to improve your hold in English language. Give it a try at least for 7 days and check your level of progress. Good luck!!
