The two lines on the outside of X stand the positive value of the number inside, therefore the answer can not be negative

Sorry I didnt mean to be rude. Anyway this function is called the absolute value function. Basically it changes - to + and leaves + numbers (and 0) as they were. So the result as chris mentioned cannot be -
