HEEELP! What is the net force of 2.4 N[N] , 1.8 N[N], and 8.6 N[S]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer they gave is 4.4 N[S] wouldn't it be a negative? Since 2.4 + 1.8 - 8.6 = -4.4?

OpenStudy (fifciol):

depends on what you call the positive direction(N or S). If S is positive than you have 8.6 -2.4-1.8 if N is positive its 2.4 + 1.8 - 8.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It doesn't say which is positive or negative :(

OpenStudy (fifciol):

I think they only care about magnitude

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhhh okay. Thank you! :)
