I try to look at the practical applications of math. Using basics like estimation, money investment returns can be easily calculated in your head. Not to mention, physics, engineering, finance, economics and so on.

some people who hate math start to love it when they begin geometry
also, a lot of earlier math can be done in a visual way

places like khanacademy.org give badges and points and keep track of what parts of the skill tree you've mastered
